Vapor tight light fixtures are specifically designed to ensure reliable lighting performance in challenging environments with high humidity, moisture, or corrosive substances. These fixtures are typically constructed with sealed housings and gaskets to prevent the ingress of moisture or contaminants. Vapor tight fixtures are commonly used in commercial settings such as industrial facilities, food processing plants, commercial kitchens, parking garages, car washes and more.
An LED vapor tight fixture is a sealed luminaire designed to prevent moisture, dust, insects, and chemical vapors from entering the fixture housing and damaging the light source or driver. The housing is typically constructed from impact-resistant polycarbonate with a continuous gasket seal between the lens and housing body. LED vapor tight fixtures carry a minimum IP65 ingress protection rating and are UL Listed for wet or damp locations. They are the standard replacement for fluorescent strip lights and wrap fixtures in parking garages, food processing facilities, cold storage rooms, car washes, warehouses, and industrial spaces.
A standard LED strip light or shop light is an open or semi-open fixture with no ingress protection which means moisture, dust, and insects can enter the housing and damage the driver and LED modules over time. LED vapor tight fixtures are fully sealed with a gasketed polycarbonate lens, making them rated for wet locations (IP65 or higher). In damp or wet environments, using a non-sealed fixture is both a safety hazard and a code violation. Vapor tight fixtures also carry IK impact ratings that standard strip lights do not, making them appropriate for food processing, car washes, and other high-abuse applications.
IP65 is the minimum rating for most wet and damp location applications including parking garages, warehouses, utility rooms, and covered outdoor areas. IP66 is recommended for applications with direct high-pressure water spray, such as car wash equipment bays and food processing areas subject to hose-down cleaning. IP67 is specified where temporary immersion risk exists, such as in floor-level fixture installations in wet processing areas.
NSF/ANSI 2 is an independent third-party certification verifying that a fixture's materials, construction, and cleanability meet the food equipment safety requirements established by NSF International. NSF-certified vapor tight fixtures have housings and lenses made from food-safe materials that do not leach chemicals into food, are smooth and cleanable to prevent bacterial harboring, and are free of crevices where food particles can accumulate. NSF/ANSI 2 certification is required by regulation for fixtures installed in food zones and splash zones in USDA-inspected meat processing plants and FDA-regulated food processing facilities. It is strongly recommended, and often required by local health code, for commercial kitchen installations above food preparation surfaces.

Standard LED vapor tight fixtures are typically rated for operating temperatures down to -20°C (-4°F), which covers most refrigerated cooler applications. Freezer and blast-chiller environments require fixtures rated to at least -40°C (-40°F). Low-temperature-rated fixtures use cold-weather LED drivers and thermal management designs that maintain stable lumen output and reliable starting at sub-zero temperatures.

DLC stands for DesignLights Consortium maintains a Qualified Product List (QPL) that sets minimum standards for efficacy and performance. LED commercial vapor tights will be DLC listed but can have a variety of designations which can affect available rebates. Hazardous location fixtures, classified under NEC Article 500 and UL 844, are specifically engineered and certified to prevent ignition of flammable atmospheres. Class I, Division 2 fixtures are appropriate for locations where flammable vapors are handled but not normally present in ignitable concentrations (such as chemical storage rooms, spray booths, and oil and gas facilities). Class I, Division 1 fixtures are required where ignitable concentrations are present under normal operating conditions. Installing a standard vapor tight fixture in a classified hazardous location is a serious code violation and safety hazard.
