Low bay light fixtures are designed to provide lighting in areas with moderate to high ceilings, commonly found in warehouses, factories, and industrial facilities. These fixtures typically feature a sturdy construction and are often suspended from the ceiling using a chain or cable, allowing for easy maintenance and adjustment. Low bay light fixtures are commonly used in commercial settings such as assembly lines, storage areas, and shipping docks. Their durable design and ability to withstand harsh environments make them a reliable choice for industrial applications.
An LED low bay fixture is a commercial light designed for spaces with ceilings between 12 and 20 feet, such as retail stores, workshops, gyms, and small warehouses. Compared to high bay fixtures, low bays typically use a wider beam angle (100° – 120°) to spread light evenly across a lower ceiling without leaving hot spots directly under the fixture.
The main difference is mounting height and beam angle. Low bay fixtures are built for ceilings up to about 20 feet and use a wider beam spread for even coverage at that height. High bay fixtures are designed for ceilings above 20 feet and use a narrower, more concentrated beam to project light farther down without excessive spill. Using a high bay in a low-ceiling space (or vice versa) usually results in uneven lighting or wasted output.
Most LED low bay fixtures range from 40W to 165W, replacing 100W–400W metal halide or fluorescent fixtures at a fraction of the energy draw. As a general guide:

LED low bay fixtures typically deliver between 5,000 and 22,000 lumens, with efficacies of 130 – 160 lumens per watt in most DLC-listed models. Higher-lumen fixtures (18,000+) are common in fitness facilities, auto shops, and warehouses that need brighter, more uniform light for detailed tasks.
Most commercial-grade LED low bay fixtures carry a DLC (DesignLights Consortium) Premium or Standard listing. This matters because most utility companies require DLC-qualified fixtures to be eligible for lighting rebates and incentive programs. Checking a fixture's DLC status before purchase is the easiest way to confirm rebate eligibility in your area.
5000K (daylight white) is the most common choice for low bay applications like warehouses, gyms, and retail floors because it produces bright, energizing light that improves visibility and contrast. 4000K (cool white) is a common alternative for spaces where a slightly warmer, less clinical tone is preferred, such as showrooms or break areas. Some fixtures offer selectable CCT, letting you choose between 3500K, 4000K, and 5000K on install.
Yes. Many LED low bay fixtures are compatible with 0-10V dimming and can be paired with occupancy or daylight-harvesting sensors, either built in or added separately. This is especially useful in areas with intermittent foot traffic, like storage aisles or back-of-house spaces, where dimming or auto-shutoff can meaningfully cut energy costs.
Most low bay fixtures support multiple mounting options; surface/ceiling mount, pendant/hook mount with adjustable chain or cord, and in some cases surface-conduit mount. Pendant mounting is common in spaces where fixtures need to hang below obstructions like ductwork or shelving.
For dry indoor spaces like retail or office-adjacent warehouse areas, an IP20 or IP40 rating is sufficient. For environments with dust, moisture, or washdown requirements – such as auto shops, food storage, or covered outdoor areas – look for an IP65-rated fixture, which is sealed against dust and water spray.
LED low bay fixtures are typically rated for 50,000 to 100,000 hours of life (L70), meaning 11 – 23 years of use at 12 hours a day. Most commercial-grade fixtures carry a 5-year manufacturer warranty, with some premium models offering up to 10 years.
In most cases, replacing old metal halide or fluorescent low bay fixtures with LED is a direct swap using the existing mounting points and electrical whip, since LED low bays are built to match standard low bay footprints. This avoids the cost of reworking ceiling infrastructure while cutting energy use by 50 – 70% and eliminating ballast maintenance.
