Energy Used

A rating, expressed in watts, to indicate the rate at which a lamp consumes energy. Also known as wattage value.

Energy Used
17 Watts

Volts

A measure of "electrical pressure" between two points. The voltage specification of an incandescent lamp is the electrical "pressure" required to drive it at its designed point. The "voltage" of a ballast (e.g. 120 V) refers to the line voltage coming from the power source and is connected to the ballast.

Volts

Bulb Shape

The description of the general appearance of a lamp/bulb consists of a letter(s) followed by a number. The letter indicates the shape of the bulb and the number relates to the diameter of the bulb in eighths of an inch. For example, a common household bulb is the A-19. The bulb is "A" shape and the diameter would be nineteen 8ths of an inch, or 2 3/8".

Bulb Shape
PAR-38

Base

The end (or ends) of the lamp that fits into the socket.

Base
Medium (E26)

Beam Spread

The width of a light beam, expressed in degrees. The beam spread is often part of the ordering code for reflector lamps. For example, a 50PAR30/HIR/NFL25 is a 50-watt PAR30 narrow flood lamp with a beam spread of 25 degrees.

Beam Spread
22°

Diameter (in)

Light bulbs: a measurement of a bulb's width taken at the widest point of the bulb. Fixtures: the measurement across the widest point of a circular fixture.

Diameter (in)
4.75

Length (in)

Also referred to as "Maximum Overall Length" (MOL). For light bulbs, it measures the length of a light bulb, from the top of the bulb to the bottom of the base or pins and is typically expressed in inches. For light fixtures and ballasts, it applies to the total horizontal length of the item.

Length (in)
5.2

Average Rated Life (hr)

A measurement of the average length of time, between first use and the point when 50% of the lamps tested have stopped functioning, , using an operating cycle of 3 hours on, 20 minutes off.

Average Rated Life (hr)
45000

Brightness (Lumens)

A rating of the inital light output of a bulb, rated after 100 hrs of operation. Lumens are a measure of how much light falls on one square foot of area, one foot away from the light source.

Brightness (Lumens)
930

Finish

Light bulbs: the coating applied to the bulb causing light to be emitted in certain colors or color temperatures (see Color Temperature). Popular finishes include clear, frosted, colors (amber, blue, green, red, etc.) as well as color temperature designations ranging from warm white (2700K) to natural daylight (6500K). Fixtures: the decorative finish of the item.

Finish
Warm White

CRI

Color Rendering Index is an international system used to rate a lamp's ability to render object colors. The higher the CRI (based upon a 0-100 scale) the richer and more accurately colors generally appear. CRI differences among lamps are not usually visible to the eye unless the difference is more than 3-5 points.

CRI
85

Color Temperature (Kelvin)

An expression of the hue of the light emitted, measured in degrees Kelvin. Usually expressed by a four digit number followed by (k), such as 2700k. Higher temperatures indicate whiter, "cooler" colors, while lower temperatures indicate yellower, "warmer" colors. Some common Kelvin temperature benchmarks are 2700k (warm white), 3500k (neutral white), 4100k (cool white), 5000k (bright white), and 6500k (daylight).

Center Beam Candle Power

Center Beam Candle Power(CBPC), or Maximum Beam Candle Power(MBCP), represents the intensity of delivered light that falls onto a surface area. Delivered light describes how much useful light a bulb can deliver to a task area and is the best and most relevant measurement for evaluating LEDs and for making accurate comparisons with conventional lighting. Evaluating an LED solely or primarily on the basis if its lumen output can underestimate or otherwise give a distorted picture of the LED's performance and suitability for a given task or application.

Q & A

Philips EnduraLED Brand DIMMABLE 17 Watt lamp generates as much light as many 75 Watt halogen lamps. Can smoothly dim down to 10% power.

  • Perfect to use anywhere you are using a 75 Watt PAR38 halogen lamp

  • No lead or mercury means easy and environmentally safe disposal

  • 930 Lumens initial light output is comparable to most 75 Watt halogen lamps, while saving 58 Watts in electricity

  • VERY long life - rated to still put out 70% as much light after 45,000 hours of operation as it does when brand new

  • Energy Star qualified

CHECK PRODUCT FIT BEFORE INVESTING IN MANY - Product May Not Fit in Your Fixture.  Also, NOT RECOMMENDED for use in enclosed fixtures because heat buildup can shorten life.  DO NOT "hot swap" this lamp.  Turn off fixture before replacing existing bulb.

Beautiful light from a heavy lamp

By Bob G, Arts non-profit Tech Associate

Pros

  • Bright
  • Cool
  • Efficient

Cons

  • Heavy

Best Uses

  • Flood

Great light from this lamp with an even, soft-edged beam. Only qualm, and oa minor one, is that it's heavy. The aluminum casing weighs a lot but it's otherwise a great source of light.

Please bring the price down - it's an even price break for swapping out equivalent incadescent lamps over its life, but you're only saving the time it takes to swap lamps out, and little more.

We are switching out our Halogen bulbs to these LED's. Up to now, We have had to run our air conditioning year round. The heat produced by the halogens has been taxing on our air conditioning system

The Philips 17 watt PAR38 LED (930 lumens) seemed to deliver an amount of light similar to a halogen 75PAR38 narrow flood (1,050 lumens). The light cast from the LED seemed a bit more uniform than the halogen which has some of its light distorted by its lens. This difference is more than likely unnoticeable for most applications when using this 3000K version though the LED is slightly whiter. There is a 2700K version of this LED available though it's a bit warmer (yellower) than halogen light as well as a 4000K version that is much whiter.

As mentioned the LED with a 3000K color temperature was slightly whiter than the halogen but again, this difference may be unnoticed unless the LED is used as a replacement where there are several halogens still in service. For example, a gallery application where art is on display might require a group re-lamp rather than changing bulbs as they burn out – this would help to avoid having noticeable differences from interspersed halogen and LED light sources.

Even though halogen light is considered to have a high CRI (color rendering index, halogen considered to have 100 CRI), the LED appeared to render most colors as good as, if not better than the halogen though not significantly. The CRI on this product is 85 and is likely to cause bright colors found in retail and gallery environments to appear at least as vibrant as those illuminated with halogen options.

As always, dimming seems to be adequate though we recommend that users considering to put several LEDs on an existing dimming system proceed with caution and test the load ratings on their system to be sure the replacement LEDs are drawing enough current to allow the dimmer to do its job.

I cannot recommend this product on a cost effective basis. Yes, it nicely replaces replaces a 75w Halogen Par 30 ~$5.00 bulb but at 40+ times the price!! How can it cost that much to produce? Made in China like all the others.
