Q & A
Is one of the screw terminals intended specifically for the hot wire and one for the load or does it not matter which connects to which? also my existing dimmers are in a double-gang arrangement in which a short wire coming out of the body of the right dimmer (not the terminal) is connected to one of the terminals of the left dimmer. is this a standard configuration for this model or do i have some other model?

It doesn't matter which wire is installed to which screw. With regards to your other question, we would recommend you ask a licensed electrician.
