Volts

A measure of "electrical pressure" between two points. The voltage specification of an incandescent lamp is the electrical "pressure" required to drive it at its designed point. The "voltage" of a ballast (e.g. 120 V) refers to the line voltage coming from the power source and is connected to the ballast.

Bulb Shape

The description of the general appearance of a lamp/bulb consists of a letter(s) followed by a number. The letter indicates the shape of the bulb and the number relates to the diameter of the bulb in eighths of an inch. For example, a common household bulb is the A-19. The bulb is "A" shape and the diameter would be nineteen 8ths of an inch, or 2 3/8".

CRI

Color Rendering Index is an international system used to rate a lamp's ability to render object colors. The higher the CRI (based upon a 0-100 scale) the richer and more accurately colors generally appear. CRI differences among lamps are not usually visible to the eye unless the difference is more than 3-5 points.

CRI

Color Temperature (Kelvin)

An expression of the hue of the light emitted, measured in degrees Kelvin. Usually expressed by a four digit number followed by (k), such as 2700k. Higher temperatures indicate whiter, "cooler" colors, while lower temperatures indicate yellower, "warmer" colors. Some common Kelvin temperature benchmarks are 2700k (warm white), 3500k (neutral white), 4100k (cool white), 5000k (bright white), and 6500k (daylight).

Brightness (Lumens)

A rating of the initial light output of a bulb, rated after 100 hrs of operation. Lumens are a measure of how much light falls on one square foot of area, one foot away from the light source.

We love these, and use in living room

5

This is an excellent bulb for any room. It provides soft, even lighting. We replaced some 60 watt incandescent bulbs in our living room with these, and can't tell the difference!

Expensive but Worth It

5

Not only are these bulbs extremely efficient but the quality of the light given off is noticeably superior to incandescents and far superior to fluorescents. Expensive, but worth it just for that.

Good LED upgrade for most uses

5

Great A style LED replacement for vanity lights, desk lamps, general room lighting. It's 1/2 the cost of the Philips L Prize pro but there are trade offs: 20% more power consumption for a little less light (140 lumens), 5000 hours shorter life and does not dim down as well. If you need something that dims down to 10%, get the L Prize, or if you really need that power savings or little extra light output. That said, for basic general lighting that can still dim most of the way, this is a great lamp.

Fan Lights

I purchased this bulb to replace the compact fluorescent bulbs I was previously using in my office's ceiling fan light. They are bright, dim well, and run much cooler than the fluorescent bulbs did. On the con side, LEDs are expensive. This is mostly an experiment for me. If their rated life is correct, I shouldn't have to replace these bulbs for many years in my typical home use. However, the kicker may not be the LED itself, but the electronics driving it. Time will tell. No one is saying how long the controlling electronics are expected to last. In fact, it's the electronics package that generates what heat there is, and why LEDs are not recommended for enclosed areas.

EXCELLENT LED

Superb light quality 4 in use in cieling fan, w/dimmer. Flawless opeartion. Instant on, dims and BRIGHT with great color. The L-Prize version is even BETTER. This is still cheaper though. All LED's are not equal, the best stuff is from Philips/GE/OSRAM, avoid swag

Installed in Ceiling fan. They provide excellent light and are controllable with X10 remote control system. They run cool and the color temperature is excellent for this application. I will install them in all the ceiling fans in our home.

One of the 6 bulbs I bought makes a faint buzzing sound. It is not annoying. Hopefully, that won't impact the life. Happy otherwise - time will tell if these have a long service life.

Q & A
Can these bulbs be installed sideways or upside down?

dave

The Philips EnduraLED LED bulbs can be screwed into a fixture at any position. It will not make a difference to the performance of the lamp.

Can these be used in the standard half dome ceiling fixtures? I'm getting the sense that they cannot.

The bulb needs to be used in a well-ventilated fixture. If the fixture does not have ventilation, the heat will build up and affect the life and performance of the bulb. Provided the fixture is well ventilated and the bulb fits, it would be a suitable replacement.

Product Support

The latest Consumer Reports magazine (October 2011) recommends the "Philips Ambient LED Dimmable 60W Light Bulb", model number 12E26A60. How does this product compare to the recommended product.

Helena Smith

This item is not the exact same bulb that was recommended in the latest Consumer Reports however; it is comparable to the bulb. There are slight differences in wattage and light output but in a side-by-side comparison, it's difficult to tell the difference between the two bulbs.

Product Support

Can this bulb be used in an outdoor light fixture?

This bulb can be used outdoors providing it is protected from the elements and not used in a totally enclosed fixture. If the bulb is exposed to moisture or used in an enclosed fixture where the heat is not able to escape it will affect the life and performance of the bulb.

Product Support

Yes, as long as it is not completely enclosed. The bulb is "sutable for damp locations" -- in other words, not exposed to rain and snow directly.

Mac the Curator

Can these be used in can lighting-if you don't mind seeing the yellow/gray bulbs?

Sue

This bulb should be acceptable for recessed fixtures providing it is not an enclosed fixture and/or the fixture has ventilation for the heat to escape. Heat build up will drastically reduce the life and performance of the bulb. It is also recommended to try one in the fixture to make sure if fits properly.

Product Support

Don't see why not but an R20 or R30 would better serve the purpose.

Leitmeister

How is the service of this lamp for frequent short periods of use?

On/Off applications will not affect the life of the bulb or it's performance.

Product Support

is the price, $39.99, per bulb, or per 6 bulbs.

The pricing on our website for this product is per bulb, not pack or case.

Product Support

Its probably per bulb. A case would be (Ouch) $239.94.
