Comments about Philips Lighting Company 12 Watt, 120 Volt Dimmable LED A-Style Lamp:

Great A style LED replacement for vanity lights, desk lamps, general room lighting.

It's 1/2 the cost of the Philips L Prize pro but there are trade offs: 20% more power consumption for a little less light (140 lumens), 5000 hours shorter life and does not dim down as well.

If you need something that dims down to 10%, get the L Prize, or if you really need that power savings or little extra light output. That said, for basic general lighting that can still dim most of the way, this is a great lamp.

Comments about Philips Lighting Company 12 Watt, 120 Volt Dimmable LED A-Style Lamp:

I purchased this bulb to replace the compact fluorescent bulbs I was previously using in my office's ceiling fan light. They are bright, dim well, and run much cooler than the fluorescent bulbs did. On the con side, LEDs are expensive. This is mostly an experiment for me. If their rated life is correct, I shouldn't have to replace these bulbs for many years in my typical home use. However, the kicker may not be the LED itself, but the electronics driving it. Time will tell. No one is saying how long the controlling electronics are expected to last. In fact, it's the electronics package that generates what heat there is, and why LEDs are not recommended for enclosed areas.

                  A:

The bulb needs to be used in a well-ventilated fixture. If the fixture does not have ventilation, the heat will build up and affect the life and performance of the bulb. Provided the fixture is well ventilated and the bulb fits, it would be a suitable replacement.

                  A:

This item is not the exact same bulb that was recommended in the latest Consumer Reports however; it is comparable to the bulb. There are slight differences in wattage and light output but in a side-by-side comparison, it's difficult to tell the difference between the two bulbs.

This bulb can be used outdoors providing it is protected from the elements and not used in a totally enclosed fixture. If the bulb is exposed to moisture or used in an enclosed fixture where the heat is not able to escape it will affect the life and performance of the bulb.

Yes, as long as it is not completely enclosed. The bulb is "sutable for damp locations" -- in other words, not exposed to rain and snow directly.

This bulb should be acceptable for recessed fixtures providing it is not an enclosed fixture and/or the fixture has ventilation for the heat to escape. Heat build up will drastically reduce the life and performance of the bulb. It is also recommended to try one in the fixture to make sure if fits properly.
