Say I have only 2 bulbs to go in the container at this time. Can I hold on to this container until it is filled with 36 bulbs, then mail it back to the established destination two years from now?

There is no set time frame to return the container. It can be sent back for recycling anytime after it's been filled up.

if we purchase these recycle boxes, Do we have to pay shipping back and are we allowed to mix bulbs.

The purchase price you pay for a Bulbs.com recycling box includes the cost of shipping the filled container from your location to a certified recycling facility. We recommend that bulbs of different types not be mixed. That said feel free to mix any size linear (tube style) fluorescent such as 2’, 3’ or 4’ together in the same box. If you have compact fluorescent, circline, metal halide or high/low pressure sodium bulbs to recycle you should use a container that is designated for use with those products.
