Works great! There is no visible difference between these and higher priced bulbs with higher CRI ratings. The overall light in the room has not changed going from a pricy bulb to these.

Installing four foot lamps overhead is always difficult. Becomes more difficult if the bi-pins have jagged tips or are too long. Quality control on manufacturing these lamps is good. Easy to install.

Whenever the ballast for our older T-12 fixtures gives up, we convert the fixture to the T-8 lamps. We are tagging the T-8 fixtures with orange stick-on dots so that we know which type of lamp to carry up the ladder.
We did for a time purchase lamps from a local Home Improvement store but the pin ends seemed to be jagged or the lamps were manufactured to wider tolerances and were difficult to install.

Is a 48"- T8 able to replace a T-12 without changing ballasts? I am working with a local childrens museum moving into a new rental facility using the old style lamp fixtures and I would like make incremental changes. I have an immediate need to replace some light bulbs and want to move towards replacing light fixtures in the near future.

                                A:

You would have to change out the ballast due to different power requirements and also have to rewire the fixture a bit. At our business when our t12's go out I retrofit them to a T8 system. The ballasts are about $18.00 for each fixture plus bulbs and takes about 30 minutes. No need to buy the retrofit kits. Put in new ballast for T8 and then remove the redundancy that only T12 uses. All lamp holders are piggy backed together on each side of fixture. Take off the piggy back and make each lamp holder individually wired. For a 3 lamp fixture you only have to take loose one wire on each side. That's why when one T12 bulb burns out 2 T12 bulbs go off.

Check the label on the ballast. There will be a listing of the number of lamps and types of lamps that the ballast can accommodate, e.g. 3-F32T8, 2-F40T12. We are incrementally converting from T-12 to T-8 too but we're only doing it as the ballasts fail.

                                A:

If the current ballast has been changed out in the last few years and is electronic, there is a possibility that the ballast could be used with a T8 fluorescent tube. The information on the ballast itself can be helpful in determining if the ballast will work with T8 bulbs. Typically, the label on the ballast will list the appropriate bulbs to use. If the ballast has never been changed out or the label does not specify T8, you have a couple of options: a) continue using T12 bulbs until you replace fixtures or b) replace the existing ballasts with ballasts that will support T8 bulbs.
