A measure of "electrical pressure" between two points. The voltage specification of an incandescent lamp is the electrical "pressure" required to drive it at its designed point. The "voltage" of a ballast (e.g. 120 V) refers to the line voltage coming from the power source and is connected to the ballast.

Bulb Shape

The description of the general appearance of a lamp/bulb consists of a letter(s) followed by a number. The letter indicates the shape of the bulb and the number relates to the diameter of the bulb in eighths of an inch. For example, a common household bulb is the A-19. The bulb is "A" shape and the diameter would be nineteen 8ths of an inch, or 2 3/8".

Color Rendering Index is an international system used to rate a lamp's ability to render object colors. CRI differences among lamps are not usually visible to the eye unless the difference is more than 3-5 points.

Q & A

Maxlite brand "three-way" compact fluorescent lamp.  Selects between 13, 20, and 25 Watts of power, producing equivalent light to 60, 75, and 100 Watt incandescent lamps.  Warm white color and high color rendering mean you'll never know the difference, at least until you get your electric bill.

  • Outstanding energy efficiency - provides equivalent light to most incandescent lamps while using only a fraction of the electricity

  • Outstanding life - 8,000 hour rated life is four to eight times as long as most incandescent lamps

  • Outstanding value - replace your existing lamps with more energy efficient technology, at a competitive price

Three-contact screw base, suitable for use in "three-way" fixtures.

NOT RECOMMENDED for use in enclosed fixtures or for use with control devices such as sensors or dimmers, may shorten lamp life

Pros

  • Good Warm White Light
  • Reduces Energy Costs

Cons

  • Hums Badly
  • Tough to Fit Under Shade

Best Uses

  • Lamps without Shade Harps

Comments about MaxLite 50/75/100 Watt Incandescent Equivalent, 13/20/25 Watt 3-WAY Spiral CFL Bulb:

We tried to put these bulbs in three different table lamps which have harps - those metal hoops that hold the shade. The bulb is somewhat large and was a VERY tight fit under the harp, if it fit at all. This was a bit scary, since the tubes on the bulb are exposed and seem fragile.

Other versions of this type bulb came with small plastic harp extenders to compensate for the bulb's odd and large size, but not these.

In use they all hummed really annoyingly on all settings except the dimmest.

Bottom line: Three-way flourescents may have come a long way, but they're still "not quite ready for prime time" - stick with incandescents for now.
